Belts and grading exams in Badgie
Organise students by belt on a board, promote them after the grading exam and keep their promotion history with a rank badge, PDF diploma and family notice.

Quick answer
In Badgie, Belts is a Kanban board with one column per rank. Each student sits in the column of their current belt; when they pass a grading you drag them to the next one, set the exam date and Badgie saves the promotion in their promotion history, grants the rank badge and prepares the family notice and the PDF diploma.
In this guide
Where to find it
Web: menu Academy → Belts (/dashboard/belts). It has four tabs: Board, Program, Badges and Notices.
Student profile: Belt tab, with the current rank and the Promotion history.
Student and family app: the My belt screen with the current rank and its progression.
The module is switched on in Customize your Badgie and is built for martial-arts schools (karate, judo, taekwondo, jiu-jitsu).
Switching it on and choosing the rank system
The first time you open it, press Enable Belts and choose your rank system: Karate, Judo, Taekwondo, Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), BJJ with stripes or BJJ kids. Badgie loads that discipline's belts; karate and judo start at White and end at Black, with the intermediate ranks in between.
With Edit belts you rename, recolour, reorder or add ranks, and set the Discipline shown on the diploma, the public record and the student profile.
A dojo can teach several disciplines at once: each has its own ladder and the board shows a switch (for example Karate · Judo) to move between them.
The belts board
Each column is a belt with its student count. The first one, No belt, holds anyone without a rank yet. Each card shows the photo, the age and how long the student has held that belt, so you can see at a glance who is ready to grade.
To load a school that already has ranks: Bulk assign sets the belt of several students at once, with no ceremony or notice, and Import current belts sorts students by the belt already on their profile or enrolment form.
Promoting after the grading exam
1. Drag the student's card to their new belt (or open it from their profile).
2. In Belt promotion, set the Exam date and, optionally, Notes with the panel's remarks.
3. Keep Grant badge ticked: Badgie creates the belt badge in the student's rank collection.
4. Press Promote. The family notice is not sent on its own: it waits in the Notices tab, where you review it, download the diploma and send it when you choose.
A student's rank history
In the student profile, Belt tab, you see the current rank with the date since they hold it and the Promotion history: every promotion with the previous belt, the new one, the exam date and the notes. Each line opens the rank badge.
The history cannot be edited afterwards: it is the official record of the student's martial career at your dojo.
Rank badges and technical program
The Badges tab shows your school's set of rank badges, one per belt, with its rarity (Common, Rare, Epic, Legendary) and how many students earned it. You can regenerate the art or change each medallion's background.
In Program you link each belt to a Training course with the videos of that rank's techniques: on promotion, the student receives it in the app.
What the family sees
When the dojo sends the notice from Notices, the family gets an email «🥋 <name> is now a <rank> belt!» and, if they have a phone number, a WhatsApp, both with a button to view the rank badge. In the app, the My belt screen shows the current rank and the whole progression.
The full flow of the exam, the diploma and the notice is in the guide Grading exams and PDF diplomas.
By discipline
Karate and judo: a 12-rank ladder from White to Black. Taekwondo: its belts with intermediate ranks. Jiu-jitsu: adult BJJ, BJJ with stripes and BJJ kids. Any ladder can be renamed and extended with Edit belts.
With the AI agent
Ask the agent «how many students do I have on each belt?» or «what belt does Álex hold and when was he promoted?»: it uses the belts read tool and answers with the distribution or the student's history. The agent reads and suggests but never promotes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run karate and judo in the same school?
Yes. Each discipline has its own belt ladder and the board switches between them.
Is the family notified automatically on promotion?
No. The notice waits in Notices and only goes out when the dojo presses Send.
Can I change a belt's name or colour?
Yes, in Edit belts. The change shows on the board, the rank badge and the belt's Smart Tag.
How do I load students who already had a rank?
With Bulk assign or Import current belts: they set the belt without creating a promotion or notifying anyone.
